Smell plays an important role in how your animal perceives their surroundings. When choosing a pet perfume, consider their comfort alongside your own scent preferences. Perfume is optional; it is not a step that must always be added to complete a grooming routine.
First, notice the smell
Before choosing a product, ask yourself what you want to change. Dirt from a walk, a wet towel and a bed cover waiting to be washed call for different things. Using scented products repeatedly without understanding the source makes the distinction harder. Your animal having a natural scent does not, by itself, mean that more perfume is needed.
If a new or persistent pronounced smell is accompanied by itching, redness or discharge, consult your vet. Merck Veterinary Manual explains that itching can have different causes and that some skin conditions may also involve odour. In this situation, having the cause assessed is a better first step than trying to cover the smell.
Look beyond the name to the label
Read which animal species the product is for, where it should be applied and how to use it. Do not apply your own perfume or a household fragrance to your animal’s coat. The word “pet” does not imply suitability for every species; look for explicit instructions for cats in particular. A fragrance name does not establish age suitability either.

Keep application simple
Follow the stated method, distance and any amount specified. Do not spray repeatedly to achieve a stronger scent. Avoid the face, eyes, nose, ears and sensitive areas. The AKC’s discussion with two veterinarians emphasises using scented products sparingly on dogs, avoiding sensitive areas and watching for signs of discomfort. Take your dog’s attempt to move away from the product seriously as a preference.
Do not rush the first use at the door before a walk or just before a journey. Choose a quiet moment when you can read the directions and observe your animal. If you see coughing, repeated sneezing, redness or distress, stop use and seek guidance from your vet. If there is a known skin or respiratory sensitivity, ask their advice before using a new scented product.
Avoid homemade fragrance mixtures
Liking a plant’s scent is not a reason to apply its concentrated oil directly to your animal. The ASPCA’s essential oil guide specifically highlights the importance of concentration and formulation. Do not add essential oils to a ready-made product or mix perfumes or cleaning products together. Keep the bottle in its original packaging, closed and out of your companion’s reach.
Assess your choice by your animal’s response and the product’s directions. Use clean grooming supplies and keep the routine simple. Choosing not to use perfume is a valid option too.
